3M™ HIP 3930 vs. 3M™ DG³ 4090: Choosing Your Reflective Sheeting

3M Reflective Sheeting on 3 Stop Signs (Night TIme)

Standard vs. Premium Reflective Sheeting

The rigid signs you see on the highways and in work zones may all seem the same, but they aren’t! While two signs might look identical in the daylight, the technology behind the reflective sheeting determines how well a driver can see that message when it matters most. Choosing the right material for your traffic signs is a balance between meeting state DOT standards and ensuring maximum road safety for every driver.

The Tech Specs

3M™ High Intensity Prismatic 3930: This is your ASTM Type III/IV High Intensity Prismatic sheeting. It uses micro prismatic technology that is great for standard road applications. However, it features "directional optics," which means the orientation of the sheeting during fabrication matters if you want it to shine its brightest.

3M™ Diamond Grade (DG³) 4090: This is the Super High Intensity, Type XI heavy hitter. It utilizes "full-cube" micro prismatic technology to be as efficient as possible. Unlike standard materials, it performs at a high level no matter which way the sign is oriented, making it a more forgiving and powerful option for installers.

Visibility & Reliability

If you are dealing with wide entrance angles, sharp curves, or overhead highway signs, you want the 3M™ DG³ 4090. It is specifically designed to handle the difficult driving geometry of short and medium viewing distances.

Durability is another major factor. While 3M™ HIP 3930 typically carries a 10-year warranty, 3M™ DG³ 4090 offers an extended "shelf life" on the road with a warranty of up to 12 years.

While 3M™ HIP 3930 is a reliable standard for many municipal roads, 3M™ DG³ 4090 (Type XI) is the gold standard for high-speed roadways and critical safety areas where failure to be seen is not an option.
